The Trust Funnel and the 80/20 Rule

How content turns strangers into clients and clients into advocates.

The Trust Funnel

People move down the funnel as trust grows. Advocates send new people in at the top, already warmer than strangers.

1. Awareness: they find you

They're thinking "Who is this?" Your content shows up where they already are, with something useful. Social posts, short-form video, blogs found in search.

2. Trust: they believe you

They're thinking "Do they know their stuff?" Your content proves expertise and honesty, again and again. In-depth blogs, newsletters, real client stories.

3. Engagement: they respond

They're thinking "I like how they think." Your content invites a response: replies, comments, saves, sign-ups. Questions, newsletters, community, events.

4. Conversion: they buy or book

They're thinking "I'm ready." Your content makes a clear, easy ask at the right moment. Offers, booking pages, conversion copy.

5. Advocacy: they refer others

They're thinking "You should talk to them." Your content gives happy clients reasons and easy ways to refer. Client stories (with permission), referral asks.

The 80/20 rule: give, give, give, then ask

Give 80% of the time. Ask 20% of the time. Spread the asks out, never stacked.

GIVE · GIVE · GIVE · GIVE · ASK · GIVE · GIVE · GIVE · GIVE · ASK

The 80%: give

Educate, inform, entertain. Teach something useful. Share what you've learned. Make them smile. The only ask is a small one: read more, reply, follow along.

The 20%: ask

Make the ask clear. Schedule a call. Buy now. Sign up. Refer a friend. One clear action, tied to what you've already given.

Why it works

Trust is the bottleneck in every sale. Without it, the ask falls flat no matter how good the copy. With it, even a simple ask converts.

When every post is an ask, people stop listening. When most posts give, the occasional ask feels earned. The 80% earns the trust. The 20% spends it.

Weaving in the ask

  1. End giving posts with a soft next step: "read the full post."
  2. Connect each ask to something you gave: "If this helped, book a call."
  3. Match the ask to the stage. A new follower gets "join my list," not "buy now."
  4. Ask your happy clients for referrals. Advocacy rarely happens on its own.

Your funnel checklist

  • I can name the stage most of my audience is in right now.
  • This month, about 8 in 10 of my posts give and about 2 in 10 ask.
  • Every ask is clear, single, and tied to something I gave first.
  • I have a simple way for happy clients to refer someone.

How ContentOS fits: the Newsletter Builder follows the 80/20 rule by design, the Conversion Builder writes the 20%, and the Content Audit checks every piece before it goes out, because one wrong claim can undo a lot of trust.
